For all of history, cars have been driven by gasoline. The result? We are all using gasoline like crazy.
For all of history, cars have been driven by gasoline. The result? We are all using gasoline like crazy. One hundred and fifty years ago, the internal combustion engine was introduced. Since then human society has been using gasoline like crazy. The efficiency of that engine, and the convenience of gasoline utilisation actually helped much of world progress in the 20th century. However, gasoline can be depleted. Only extreme geological processes occurring over hundreds of million of years can produce it. The rate of human consumption means that within 200 years of use, all the gasoline produced over millions of years will be used up. And we are 150 years. The era of alternative fuels is just about to arrive. If you're in your twenties or thirties, there is a high chance that you will die in a time when gasoline is history. That's OK, you think, what's the worry then? Well, before gasoline really is depleted physically, economic forces will be felt first. As gasoline gets less and less, the amount of effort and capital needed to get whatever remaining will increase. The gasoline that is left will be in smaller pockets because the large pockets would have been sucked up dry. The cost of recovering the increasing smaller pockets is of course higher as it gets more difficult to detect and mined. The economic faster may in fact be already here. The skyrocketing gasoline prices of recent times can be more due to speculations or economic games. However, should gasoline be renewable, the prices can checked by increasing supply at will to meet demand. Nope, gasoline is not renewable, therefore it doesn't make sense to over produce now as it will end up depleted even faster. Hence the incentives to start converting to alternative fuels are here. The sooner the better. Because gasoline is not only a non renewable energy source, it is also harmful to the environment which we depend on. In fact alternative fuels have been around for quite some time. It just doesn't get noticed as long as gasoline prices is low which causes the inertia to change high. Well, not so now. Two easy alternatives are available right now. Hydrogen fuel cells as well as biodiesel are both affordable to society at large with just a small initial capital and time commitment.
