A complete detailed explanation of the history and theory of how Chiropractic and Chiropractor techniques has evolved. Dr Martin is a Chiropractor in St Charles, Illinois, and has a clinic there. There are many different philosophies of conventional and alternative medicine and since this period Chiropractic has been established as a cornerstone in alternative medicine. Chiropractic was founded in the 1890's by Daniel David Palmer. He believes that the best health care is a multidisciplinary approach. His philosophy is that the treatment of each patient should be based on each individual case, and whichever treatment works best for that patient is the treatment that should be administered regardless of the modality or profession. Daniel David Palmer believes that every health care profession is relevant and that each can be beneficial in its own way. However, I strongly believe in the Chiropractic adjustment. It is a fact that the spinal cord is attached to the brain and courses through the vertebral column. Nerve fibers run from the brain through the spinal cord and out the vertebral column as peripheral nerves. The peripheral nerves attach to all the muscles in the body. The brain sends information pertaining to movement and balance to the muscles and the muscles send information about their orientation in space and the tension of the muscle. Trauma to the body and everyday posture causes the musculature to compensate. This causes some muscles to activate and become tight and other muscles to be inhibited and loosen. The bones in your body act as attachment sites for muscles. When an injury occurs the muscles "guard" against the injury by tightening. Tightening of the musculature can place tension on the bones that they are attached to and cause pain and discomfort. The basic philosophy of the adjustment is that misalignment in the spinal column affect the function of the body. Manipulating these segment back into their proper alignment helps the body function at its optimal level. It is theorized that this is accomplished through feedback that the muscle sends to the brain. The tendons that attach muscle to bone have receptors that monitor the tension level and send the information to the brain. A Chiropractic adjustment increases the tension that is felt by the tendon. Manipulation causes the receptors to send a signal to the brain saying that maximal tension has been reached. The brain then sends a reflexive response to the tendon telling it to relax--thus resetting the muscle length and reducing the spasm. It is only my personal opinion that there is no Chiropractic technique that is the best. Also, I believe the procedure that should be administered, should only be based on the individuals response to the that particular treatment. The Chiropractic techniques that I prefer to use with the most effectiveness are Deerfield, States, Thompson drop and Diversified. Even though manipulation is a very important tool in the treatment of patients, I do not believe that it is the only treatments to be used. There are many other treatment modalities that can help an individual to effectively recover from an injury. The treatment modalities should include soft tissue massage, myofascial work, interferential therapy, ultrasound, flexion-distraction, light therapy, daily exercises, stretches, vitamin supplementation and proper nutrition habits. The most effective and by far the most efficient treatment incorporates the appropriate combination of all these modalities.
