Biodiesel good? or bad? - 2007/07/25 23:01 I watched a documentry saying that the plants that are been cultivated for biodiesel are distroying our rainforests and soils for re plantation? Anyone know anything about this?

Jim Rogers in his book "Adventure Capitalist" talked about driving around the world looking for the best investments (a great book, by the way). He was talking about some of the surprising links between commodities and talked about Brazil using ethanol. "That's small beer" I thought.

Apparantly palm oil and soyabean oil are some of the biggest users of the newly cultivated rainforest areas. Here are some articles on this:

Re:Biodiesel good? or bad? - 2007/09/30 07:38 Till I came here I didn't realise that biodiesel was actually produced in the manner that it is. I was more of the understanding that it came from waste vegetable oil.

So, that was an eye opener right off the bat! Anyhow, the issue with growing plants especially for oil is the same as growing corn for ethanol. Ultimately we will have a choice to make because replacing the fuel needs for the entire western world will take a lot of food growing land.
