Politcal Ploy - 2007/10/01 09:50 Ladycat has well laid out for us the problems and the truth behind ethanol. I had long thought that it wasn't all it was being made out to be, and what is more I have read that in Brazil the production of ethanol is from a sugar cane-a waste product at that, and is far more efficient. It has enabled them to reduce oil imports over the 29 years that the program has been in operation.

Take a look here; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethanol_fuel_in_Brazil
Ladycat I would especially like to hear your views on this.

So why, given the success of the Brazilian program, did American programs decide to go with corn? Is this all just a political ploy, pulling the wool over the eyes of the masses? A way to placate people into being good little citizens whilst keeping the big oil companies happy?

What is the purpose of this program?

Re:Politcal Ploy - 2007/10/02 01:53 I haven't actually figured out what is going on.

A couple of months ago, one of those news magazine TV shows had a long piece on Brazil's sugar ethanol. Between that, and what little I've read, Brazil has been trying to get the US market on ethanol. They can ship it to us cheaper than we pay for oil, and cheaper than we can produce corn ethanol. But for some reason, Bush refuses to make the deal. Why? I have no idea.

I've been inundated with farming all my life. I grew up in it. It's still part of my life. So I am qualified to gripe about the corn ethanol program.

For 2 years straight, this country has had severe drouth in some parts, and flooding in other parts. As a result of that, our grain production is down. Other parts of the world have also had crop failures. World grain production is WAY down. That's why you're seeing the runaway inflation at the grocery store.

Yet, they want to earmark a HUGE chunk of the corn crop for ethanol production.

We need to take Brazil up on their offer. They can produce 10 times the amount of sugar ethanol that they now produce with ease. This would free up our corn crop for human and animal food, and vastly lower our dependence on oil.

We have a bunch of idiots in Washington. What else can I say?

Re:Politcal Ploy - 2007/10/02 06:36 I almost wish that it was simple as stupidity in the White House. Honestly I think that there is a little more to it than that, and I would love to know what.

I'm still reading and studying up on it. I know there is *something* funny going on, I just can't figure out what.

The conspiracy theorists are saying big oil is behind it. Could be. An awfully lot of oil is being used to produce corn ethanol.

Re:Politcal Ploy - 2007/10/05 23:09 Read my topic here. Corn is very cheap and hugely abundant in the United States. Every year we have tons and tons of excess corn. It would also help American farmers. Thats why corn is being pushed.
