Essentially these cars burn a mixture of both gas and some sort of biodiesal (such as ethanol). This means that they don't have the awful performance that pure ethanol cars have while burning less fossil fuel.

That energy is used and helps the car use less gas. But a negative thing is that they do not really save you all that much money or fuel until years of use.
