The sun has been producing energy constantly since its birth, however only now are we seriously looking to harness that energy for our every day modern lifestyles. We can capture solar energy for heat to warm our homes and even our swimming pools.

Traditionally, when people think of solar energy, they think of making electricity with solar photovoltaic cells. And though this is one use of solar energy, on a small scale, solar energy can be much better used as a source of heat energy for multiple applications.

So how can we capture the suns energy to produce heat? Well first you need a medium to capture the heat into, and the best solution for this is to capture the heat into water. This hot water can then be used for washing or heating homes with under floor heating for example.

One of the ways to use the power of the sun is to build a solar water heater. The basic principle of a solar water heater is to secure as much solar energy as possible within the smallest footprint. There are multiple designs of solar water heater, including the passive.

The design of the passive water heater pre-dates almost all other designs. This does not mean however that other designs have surpassed it, far from it; the passive solar water heater is still one of the most efficient and reliable solar water heater designs to use.

Before you can build your passive solar water heater, you obviously need to buy the right parts. Spending a few hundred dollars will be enough to purchase all the parts you need. One of the main components is the black water storage vessel, which will be sized to meet your own individual heating demands. Secondly an insulated solar collector box will be constructed to house the black water storage vessel. Then a pump and flow and return pipes.
