A deck of tarot cards is divided into two separate groups, the minor arcana and the major arcana. The two groups together total 78 cards. The major difference between the two groups is more than just the obvious differences in appearance. They each have their own particular reason for being turned, from the major to minor events in a persons life.

Minor Arcana cards take on the lesser role of showing day to day events. While it is important to take note of what all the cards show you, it is the Major Arcana cards that deal with the bigger events in a persons life such as paths to take and choices to make.

The design of the Tarot deck is intrigue and visually appealing, especially that of the Major Arcana cards. These cards are very distinctive and colorful and they need to be considering the importance of them during a Tarot a reading and this importance will not be overlooked by a good Tarot reader.

The major arcana cards consist of a total of 22 cards. They are numbered from zero to 21. On the number zero card is The Fool. The highest of the major arcana cards is the number 21, which is on The World card. As previously stated, these cards are a representation of the major dealings in the individuals life, or their life path. On the zero card The Fool stands for the beginning or starting point and The World is a symbol for the ending or the finishing point. The remaining cards show the trials, tribulations and life lessons that the individual needs to learn. These lessons can range from addiction, which is represented by The Devil card to love which is represented by The Lovers card.

When the Tarot card reader turns over a Major Arcana card during a reading they will tell you that there is a major situation in you're life. The situation can be good or bad and apply to any aspect of your life such as work, home or pleasure. It may be the reader needs to tell you that there is something you need to address in your life to enable you to move on.

The majority of the cards are in the Minor Arcana (56) and pertain to situations and events that occur day to day.The things that Minor Arcana cards reveal are able to be altered by an individual. A Tarot reader will point these out to you during a reading.

Minor arcana cards are split up into four groups. They are pentacles, wands, cups and swords. It is common for the groups to change symbols, this is so the reader is able to understand the cards a little better and explain the meaning to the client a little clearer. An example of this is the pentacles are frequently changed into coins. This is changed to coins because the pentacle symbolizes money. The sword is a symbol of conflict. The cups symbolize relationships.

It is rare that someone will not get a mix of both types of Tarot groups in a reading. When minor cards are turned they can be modified as they are changeable depending on information given to the reader. However cards of the Major Arcana deal with a persons destiny and are generally not changeable.
