Baptisms are often performed for a family's newborn a few weeks after the birth. The ceremony, which is usually conducted by the parent's minister, consists of submerging or anointing the baby in water that has been blessed. The event is generally attended by many close friends and family members who are all expected to bring baptism gifts for the new child.

Baptism presents are a way to welcome the infant into its family's spirituality and church. Traditional presents are usually personal and religious in nature. The tradition began as purely giving the baby small coins and silver, as a way for it to begin his or her meaningful journey.

Medallions featuring a patron saint is generally considered a popular and personal gift to present to a recently christened baby. The medallions are often placed on a gold or silver chain and worn on the neck. Presenting him or her with one featuring a saint they were named for or one they share a birthday with is always an excellent choice. You could even purchase a necklace with the favorite saint of the baby's parents.

Another meaningful gift is a hand made quilt or blanket. Brand new parents will get much use out of a blanket that can be placed in their infant's bassinet or hung on the nursery wall. Include spiritual symbols or pictures in the quilt's pattern to make it even more fitting for a child's baptism ceremony. Or, to make it even more traditional, include the child's name into the blanket too.

To keep with the older baptism traditions, a financial present is always a good one. Savings bonds, placed in a simple card, make great christening gifts. They are obtained at banks and mature over a period of time. Other financial investments made in the child's name, like stocks or bank accounts also make wonderful gifts.

A christening pillow is yet another idea. They are usually embroidered with the child's name, birth date, and date of baptism. And whether they are kept in the baby's crib or displayed in the family room, the parents of the child, and one day even the child themselves, will be sure to cherish the thoughtful gift for many years to come.

Because the Baptism gift is being presented to a child, usually a plush animal will be the most popular. Infants are particularly attracted to stuffed toys and will surely get a lot of use out of one. To maintain the baptism's theme, pick a stuffed toy that relates to a religious theme such as a whale or sheep.

Last but not least, a new bible is a very good christening present too. Even though an infant won't get much use out of such a gift for quite a few years, it will still be a beloved item within its family. An engraved bible will be cherished by the baby's parents, who will make sure that it is kept for when the child is mature enough to use it. Placing it in a silk bag will help preserve it too.
