If your garage is like ours, it's overstuffed with things that could be put to better use elsewhere; decent coffee tables and recliners, toaster ovens, birdhouses and even (yikes!) a couple of packs partially used adult diapers. Memorial Day is a traditional time for garage sales all across the United States and it fits perfectly with the idea of Spring Cleaning, too. I myself am a little reluctant to put the adult diapers out in our front yard, but Memorial Day is also the perfect time to call a local charity; a donation of adult diapers can be a good boost to both giver and receiver.
Oh my goodness, our attics, closets and garden sheds fill up fast, don't they? And that stuff possesses us as much as we possess it sometimes. Is this is why yard sales are so exhausting? I think so; it often takes a major life event such as moving or the settling of an estate to get one organized. It's not just our retentive nature that gets in the way, it's all the decisions that have to be made too: "I know I'm going to need this thing the moment I sell it.", "Is this a priceless antique?", "Is this too personal to sell used?", etc., etc. There is an emotional toll that people dread when dealing with articles from their past. The oddest little memento can set off a sentimental reaction that weighs down the already challenging experience of cleaning out the garage. In this context, Memorial Weekend may just be the ideal time to be sifting through items from memory lane. Once again, consider lightening the tasks burden by contacting a charity that will make good use of some of those things that must move on and make pick-up arrangements. With a pickup or drop-off time set, people often find the job moves forward with the speed and intensity required to finish in a timely manner. Oh yeah, and those partial cases of adult diapers? Well, if you're doing a garage sale, you can do what my neighbor did: She slapped a small sign on those partial packs of diapers that simply said: "Gramps doesn't need diapers where he is now." Better yet, phone a local free clinic or a shelter ministry and you will find your inquiry warmly greeted. Adult diapers are a financial burden for many who need them; their cost not covered by Medicare provisions, nor many other programs. Benefit others with your gift this Memorial Day and remember to hang on to your tax deductible receipt!
