We pray for miracles only when something terrible has happened; someone is sick or hurt or that true love has found another. We hurt so deeply and we beg for help but nothing happens. Is nothing listening or is all the crap from the pulpit true, that we are undeserving of divine attention? You've got it all backward.
We pray for miracles only when something terrible has happened; someone is sick or hurt or that true love has found another. We hurt so deeply and we beg for help but nothing happens. Is nothing listening or is all the crap from the pulpit true, that we are undeserving of divine attention? You've got it all backward. There is so much wonder around us that we take it for granted. We call it luck or just nature and fail to give credit to a Spirit of the Universe that keeps our toenails growing and rivers flowing. The following true story recounts how we never know what miracles we dispense in our day to day lives. It reminds me to be thankful for the events of the day even if I don't see them all as positive. I never know when..well, Ill let the story tell it. The streets of Los Angeles are hard places to live. They are inhabited by even harder people but the street missions offer a place of refuge. Except one man. His name was O'Sullivan and he was so mean a drunk that even the missions had banned him. One day he called a 12 step program to help him get sober. A man named Bob responded to the call, eventually finding O'Sullivan drunk in the cellar of an old hotel. The shivering, skeletal wretch lay on an old mattress soaked with urine. He had soiled himself but he could still talk. By coincidence, Bob had once been in this man's shoes. He dragged a wooden box as close to the bed as his tear ducts would allow and told his story. His story involved telling of jails and hospitals and institutions. He spoke not only of pain and sorrow but also of miracles and recovery and well being. By the time Bob had finished O'Sullivan was asleep. Bob stood up and pulled a filthy sofa cover over his sleeping audience. He shook his head and walked away. He had done what he could. Some years later, Bob was a speaker at a convention. In his talk, he mentioned his episode with O'Sullivan and how his action had yielded nothing. He told his listeners that they should not get discouraged. You never knew what part luck was to play in any circumstance. Once he was finished, Bob walked into the audience to renew old friendships. A young, spotlessly dressed young man approached him confidently and took his hand. His sparkling smile widened as he said, "I want to thank you, Sir." "I can think of no reason for you to be thanking me," Bob said, mystified. Letting go of Bob's hand almost hesitantly, the young man said, "By the strangest of coincidences, I was walking by this room as you spoke of your visit and what you thought of as a failure in O'Sullivans slum." Not sure what was coming next, Bob stood motionless. The young man was having difficulty controlling his voice. "You see, that night, I was coming down off the worse debacle I had ever been on. I was frozen in fear, withdrawal and the DT's. Several miracles brought us together that night. You did not fail. I heard every word you said. I did what you said worked for you and I haven't used or drank since. That's why I wanted to thank you." Bob wasn't sure how to handle this. OSullivan had been an old man even back then and someone had killed him some weeks later near a dumpster and Bob told the young man so. Tears filled in the young man's eyes. "I was hiding under the bed." As you saw in the story, the answer to a prayer can come quickly. Most times, however, there is a time delay. The Universe has to arrange for coincidences to happen, for people to bump into each other and all the other things that will allow your prayer, your wish, to manifest at the best possible time and place. We leave a wake of miracles behind us all day long. We rarely see their result but we create them all the time. We are channels for the Universe. We impact and interact with each other's existence. The challenge for us is to keep the channel clear to allow this flood of abundance into our lives and the lives of others. Hiding under the bed is a favorite way of the universe. We don't know what we don't know. That allows us to be the carriers of miracles or at least to be small players in the great play of existence.
