The phenomenon known as psychic surgery first began to be reported in the mid 1900s amongst Spiritualists in Brazil and the Philippines. The procedure entails the apparent penetration of a patient's body without the use of scalpels or other surgical instruments, and the removal of matter that practitioners claim is evil spirit-induced foreign bodies. The act concludes with the instantaneous closing of the incision, leaving behind no visible signs of either wounds or scars.

Psychic surgery came into public recognition in the late 1950's, after two authors published the book Into the Strange Unknown. The authors, Ron Ormond and Ormond McGill, referred to the procedure as "fourth dimensional surgery," while expressing their belief that there must be some level of truth to the phenomena, since their motion picture evidence indicated no sleight of hand or other tricks that would be used by common magicians. The practice has been condemned in many places in the world, declared a hoax by the Federal Trade Commission, and cited by the American Cancer Society as a threat to the life of anyone who undertakes it in lieu of standard and accepted professional medical surgery. There are some practitioners of psychic surgery who do in fact make actual incisions - but in all such recorded cases to date, there is a visible wound left behind. Most who perform the procedure utilize sleight of hand techniques. In fact, testimony before the Federal Trade Commission by two psychic surgeons was quite revealing. Both acknowledged that the penetration of the body was only symbolic and that the common practice was to "remove" animal tissue and blood from the patient's body. Telepathy is the ability to engage in direct mental communication with another individual, and has been popularized in such movies as the X-Men. The ability ranges from mere mind-to-mind talking to Clairvoyance is also known as remote viewing, and is the ability to obtain information over long distances from unseen sources. Precognition is also known as premonition, and entails the acquisition of information about the future - most often via visions or dreams. Psychokinesis on the other hand, involves the interaction of the mind with physical objects. It can encompass telekinesis and bio-psychokinesis. Telekinesis is the ability to mentally move or otherwise affect other objects, while bio-psychokinesis is the ability to mentally interact with other living systems, affecting tissue on the molecular level. It is most often used by psychic healers all over the world. As with almost every unknown, it is misunderstanding and lack of knowledge that stands at the root of superstition and preconceived prejudices. Attempting to better understand these varieties of paranormal abilities is the first step for anyone who truly seeks to ascertain the veracity of those who claim to possess these psychic talents. There are many books available on the internet today that will go into further detail about all psychic phenomena. These books can easily be found by searching psychic phenomena on Google or other search engines alike. A simple search can open a whole new world to psychic phenomena.
