The Davenport brothers, namely Ira Erastus (September 17, 1839-1911) and William Henry (February 1, 1841-July 1877), were famous for conjuring spirits, and entities from the other world, during the 1800s-1900s. They were claimed by some people to be psychic mediums, who were able to present illusions of the supernatural kind.

A Look at the History of the Davenport Brothers

Spiritualism began gaining popularity in 1854, the same time these two psychic brothers were just starting with their work. Their father managed them, while the people around them continued to follow their works, while others speculated. And then another person entered their lives, a man named William Fay. A time came when their performances got introduced by Dr. J.B. Ferguson, a follower of Spiritualism, and a former minister. His belief in the spiritual and psychic powers of the Davenport brothers was sincere.

Out of all the acts the two brothers did, there was one that was made most famous --- the "box illusion". This was how it happened: The two brothers would get inside the box, all tied up. This box was also filled with musical instruments. As the box was covered, the musical instruments began making sounds. But when the box was opened again, the audience saw that both brothers were still tied to their original position. People in the audience were able to see that the Davenport brothers sought the help of spirits to help create the sound. They were able to do this because they were Psychic Mediums.

For a decade, the two brothers enjoyed a fruitful career. They toured the United States, while showcasing their abilities. And then they were investigated by an organization called the Ghost Club, composed of people who were non-believers of their abilities. They dared the two brothers to communicate with Spirits. But the findings of the club forced them to concede, and believe, that the brothers' abilities were real.

There were magicians like John Henry Anderson, and Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin, strived to reveal the brothers' secrets by copying their performances, and jotting down exposs. None were ever successful.
