A break up can leave you feeling like only half the person you were in your relationship, with no memory of how you were beforehand. Many people want to start dating after a break up to help heal their broken heart, but find that they just can't manage to stop crying.

Movies and popular songs have trivialized a broken heart, but the fact of the matter is that a broken heart can be more painful and feel more life threatening than open heart surgery. No, a broken heart may not be able to kill you, but the symptoms can certainly make you feel like you want to curl up and die.

When suffering from a broken heart, it is not uncommon to experience drastic urges such as the craving to call your ex every waking minute of the day or to binge eat to take your mind off of the sadness you feel. These feelings are perfectly normal and something that just about every serious relationship goes through at its end, and will begin to subside as time goes on.

Doing things like looking at pictures of your ex girlfriend or ex boyfriend will not help. The natural thing to do is to think about your ex and remember the happy times when you were with them, but the key to healing a broken heart is to keep moving and making new memories.

Instead of trying so hard to get over your ex, focus on things that make you happy. That really is the key to getting over a broken heart more quickly. You see, if you're constantly thinking about getting over your ex, you will only be thinking about then more and more. Just forgetting someone who you spent a lot of time with in an instant is an unrealistic goal.

Some people end up getting back together with their exes, and others eventually move on. But the important thing to remember through all of this is that the broken heart symptoms will pass, and you will emerge as your old happy self in the end. Just don't forget that you are not alone. A break up is something that we all experience at some time or another, and no one said it was going to be easy!
