NLP was originated in the 1970s by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. Bandler was a computer scientist and Grinder, with perhaps a more obvious link, was a linguistics professor. They had a mutual interest by way of successful people and what made them successful. This interest led to their study of thought patterns of thesepoeple and their observations of how they think and behave. This formed the basis of Neuro Lingusitic Programming and the patterns found during this time are still observed to the application of NLP.
They studied the work of esteemed men in the field of human behaviour and observed some patterns of highly regarded therapists in America. Their most famous case was Virgina Satir which was a well-known family therapist and whose success was based on being specific. They saw that she managed to successfully change the behaviour of her clients through this technique of being specific. The successes of grinder and Bandler led to what is now known as the Meta Model which is essentially a replica of Satir's thought patterns. It is a highly specific model. These thought patterns, in general, have been known to achieve results in minutes and hours rather than months and years as that of a psychotherapist whose endless hours of conversations on the couch fail to achieve anything more than a momentary sense of relief with no enduring change. So this was how Neuro Lingustic Programming was developed. It was borne out of research and discovery along with an application of the techniques involving modelling the thought patterns of successful people with hope that these successes can be achieved in those whom NLP is being applied to. NLP is used on many, many individuals today and can also be found in the fields of business and education, among others. |
