The Great Cycle as measured by the Mayan Long Count Calendar will come to a close on December 21, 2012. No one knows what the start of a new cycle means, or what events this may trigger. Is it possible that this means the end of planet Earth? While the Mayans left us little information about what to expect, there have been many suggestions and theories about what might happen on the 21st day of December in the year 2012.
The Mayans are not alone in ending the cycle here on their calendars, many other groups also mark this day as the end of a cycle. The 104,000 year cycle and the 26,000 year Precision of the Equinoxes are also said to be coming to an end in two years. There are some scientists who think there is something going on where the south will become north and north will become south, called re-polarization. The Galactic equator and the December solstice sun perfectly align in what is called the Precision of the Equinoxes. Currently most humans place more importance on extrinsic values compared to intrinsic values, and the Mayans thought that this alignment would cause a World age Rebirth process where these priorities would shift. We may experience damage to our electrical and information systems during this time due to solar flares, which release heavy doses of radiation towards our planet that can interfere with our communications systems. During a powerful solar flare, we could potentially lose such everyday devices as our radios, air traffic control and even the satellites that we rely on for almost everything. A large solar flare could have the same destructive power as several thousand of the atomic bombs that were dropped on Japan. Despite what the popular stories would have you believe, the Mayans did not see this as the end of the world. It simply marks the end of one Life Cycle and the beginning of a new one. If this is true, then it seems far more likely that any changes that do happen will take place slowly over a period of time instead of in one massive event. This Life Cycle, according to the Mayans, has been filled with people who cared more about material good than other things that are truly important in life, and they believed that the end of this life cycle could mean that people would change their greedy, uncaring way of life. The focus should shift in 2012 to worrying more about things that are really important in life and that can make you really enjoy your life as much as possible. This dramatic change in the way society behaves is going to be a big change, but not the end of the world as some people still try to claim.
