Witchcraft may have a bad rap, but science is usually held in high esteem. Why is this. Is it that the occult is mysterious while the sciences are taught in schools. Is it that witchcraft is associated with women, while science is associated with men?

Though shalt not suffer a witch to live. It sounds like the bible is telling us that the practice of casting spells is purely evil. But in modern times, many scholars admit that this phrase was probably mistranslated. In another section of the bible, witches are even presented in a sympathetic and helpful light. Modern scholars suggest that the actual term meant those who practiced their arts to harm others, and not those who practiced to help them.

But look at the new book and video, The Secret. It has come out to rave reviews and been endorsed by TV personalities. The idea behind all of this media attention is hardly new. It went by the name, Creative Visualization, a few decades ago. Before that, maybe it was called casting a spell.

Modern witches will admit that their arts are mental, and the better they become at flexing their mental muscles, the more powerful their spells become. Think about gurus who teach positive thinking and scientists who study the effect of placebos.

Herbs are another example. We all know that modern medicine evolved from the ancient herbalists lore. Consider natural painkillers or sleep aids like willow bark and chamomile. How different is brewing a tea than prescribing a pill?

Lots of spells call for natural oils with distinct odors. Scientific study is beginning to support the basis of aromatherapy too. If you drink tea to wake up, is this different than smelling some rosemary oil? Why is one just part of a regular day while the other is considered magic.

Scientists have barely begun to study our minds. We really do not understand our own brains. That should be obvious. But we do realize that our outlook and attitude affect the way our lives turn out.

The ancients may have called it magic, but tomorrow we may take it for granted as common science.
