World Youth Day (WYD) is by far the largest youth event in the world and is held by a host country every two to three years. This year the WYD 2008 event host is Sydney, Australia and it is expected that up to 225,000 young people from within Australia and around the globe will attend. The event starts on Tuesday 15th of July and ends on Sunday 20 July. This year will also see the first ever visit to Australia by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.

This year the WYD 2008 event host is Sydney, Australia and it is expected that up to 225,000 young people from within Australia and around the globe will attend. The event starts on Tuesday 15th of July and ends on Sunday 20 July. This year will also see the first ever visit to Australia by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.

The last WYD event was held in Cologne where over 400,000 pilgrims registered for the event. Pope John Paul II established WYD in 1986 His aim was to have a regular meeting of young Catholics from all around the world so to celebrate and learn more about their faith and fellow youth.

Governments and cultures have differing opinions as to what age a person is classified as a youth. The period between fifteen to twenty four is what the United Nations define as youth. Teenagers, young persons or adolescents are all terms used to describe youth. Some would argue that maturity of mind and spirit is a personal thing and as such a person should not be defined as such.

Society has a habit of defining and categorizing things, it helps us to understand thing better. However each one of us is unique and each one of us will experience unique situations throughout out lifetime. World Youth Day Sydney provides youth the opportunity to discover the experience of others that will enhance ther own knowledge and understanding.

While much emphasis is given to the problems of youth in many societies not enough is said about the contributions that youth offer society. Youth have the ability to adapt to changes very quickly and often lead the way with forward thinking. Given encouragement and support youth have the ability to change the world and make it a better place for us all. We should put as much faith as we can into our youth as are our future.

Everyone in society can play their part in assisting our youth and elevating their understanding. At school the teachers can have great influence on students and in sport youth may look up to their heroes. Religious instruction plays a very important role in helping youth to understand their purpose in life and the importance of God role in their lives.

World Youth Day Australia will provide our young people the opportunity to connect with God as one, to celebrate and give thanks for all God's work. In the world of uncertainty that we live in it is vital that todays youth receive the strength needed to overcome the challenges. Pilgrims from across the globe will unite together in June to show the world that the faith of youth is strong and that with God's grace all the challenges will be met and overcome.
