Many people have predicted the end of the world, and some of them have provided a remarkable level of specificity about the events that will occur. Obviously, most of them were wrong, as we're still here. However, some of these predictions haven't been disproven because their dates for the end of the world have not yet come, and this latter group includes the family of 2012 prophecies.

While 2012 prophecies have excited some official comments, there is much more speculation on the Internet. There is almost always at least 2012 thread active on most forums, many sites discuss it extensively, and many bloggers with philosophical bents comment on the phenomenon.

The Mayan 2012 prophecies provide no details as to how the world will end. Simply put, December 21, 2012 is the date that Mayan calendar ends so many Mayan-prophecy adherents take that as an indication that the world will end on that date.

The actual details of the world's end change depending on who is looking at the information. Some think the end will be brought about by a natural disaster, others think it may be less literal and more the end of the world as we know it as opposed to the absolute end of the world. Some prophecy believers feel that the change will come about with the predicted alignment of the galaxy, a once in a 28,600 year occurence, on December 12th, 2012.

The majority of people don't believe this. The Mayan's predictive record is strong, but there are many holes in their theories about 2012. The Mayan calendar might have been revised if their culture had continued to the present, and it may just be a coincidence that one of their long cycles just happens to end in 2012. This date, therefore, should carry no special significance.

As with many prophecies, there are arguments for and against every aspect. The only way to be certain of the outcome, sadly, is to wait it out until 2012.
